I have always wondered about Lucius's motive in slipping the diary to Ginny.
For a long time, I figured he really had no idea of its uses or power. It was simply one of Lord Tom's school things that he couldn't sell to Mr. Borgin - because, well it was one of Lord Tom's things. In the book, Borgin hints at cooler dark stuff rumored to be hidden in Malfoy manor.
Anyhoo, from the above thoughts, I always figured that he wanted to get rid of it and use it to frame Arthur at the same time. It makes sense as they are enemies and all.
Yet, why then would Dobby try to keep Hermione away from school if he knew Lucius was planning something horrible, i.e. opening the CoS?
So, Lucius HAD to know what the book was capable of and was doing much more than trying to plant a taboo item on the Weasley's. If Lucius didn't know, then Dobby would have no way of knowing about it either. Would he?
OK, thinking along those lines then, I wonder this:
1) Was Lucius aware that the diary would indeed open the CoS, and was hoping it would get the ball rolling for him to get Dumbledore kicked out and gain more power over happenings at Hogwarts? (in it solely for his own power schemes)
2) Was Lucius following a long-standing order from Lord Tom?
Also, consider this quotation from GoF:
I just wonder, what exactly were his motives?
What do you think?

"Lucius, my slippery friend," he whispered, halting before him. "I am told that you have not renounced the old ways, though to the world you present a respectable face. You are still ready to talke the lead in a spot of Muggle-torture, I believe? Yet you never tried to find me, Lucius... your exploits at the Quidditch World Cup were fun, I daresay... but might not your energies have been better directed towards finding and aiding your master?"
"My Lord, I was constantly on the alert," came Lucius Molfoy's voice swiftly from beneath the hood. "Had there been any sign from you, any whisper of your whereabouts, I would have been at your side immediately, nothing could have prevented me-"
"And yet you ran from my Mark, when a faithful Death eater sent it into the sky last summer?" said Tom lazily, and Mr. Malfoy stopped talking abruptly. "Yes, I know all about that, Lucius... you have dissapointed me... I expect more faithful service in the future."
"Of course, my Lord, of course... you are merciful, thank you..."
