My guess is ALbusDUmbledore, headmaster of HOgwarts and CHief of the Order of the Pheonix.
My reason for this is the fact that you mentioned a pair of nice, warm socks and in the first book (Scorcerer's stone) HArry asks dumbledore what he sees when he loks into the mirror of Erised, and he replies that he would see a lot of warm, wool socks.

He also defeated the dark wizard Grindelwald and is the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot. The other part is refurring to the fact that he used to be the transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts.
