Here you can discuss anything lotr or tolkien related. Try and keep non lotr topics to the general board though.

What do you think "The Two Towers" are that are used for the title. I think it is the towers of Surmon and Sauron.

I believe they are referring to the towers orthanc and barad-dur.
But from what I've heard tolkien never stated so it could be left up to debate.

Well, take in to account all the towers that hold signifigance. These would be, Barad dur, Minas Morgul, Cirth ungol, Orthanc, and Minas Tirith. You must also take in to account that Tolkien orginally wanted LOTR to be a single book, not a trilogy. He even stated himself that he didn't like the title "The Two Towers."
"I am not at all happy about the title 'the Two Towers'. It must if there is any real reference in it to Vol II refer to Orthanc and the Tower of Cirith Ungol. But since there is so much made of the basic opposition of the Dark Tower and Minas Tirith, that seems very misleading." The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien No 143, dated 1954
All these towers are connected in some way. Gandalf was imprisoned on Orthanc, whereas Frodo was imprisoned in Cirtih Ungol. Minas Morgul was the fortress of the Witch-king, where the armies of Mordor assualted Minas Tirith in the siege of Gondor, and the battle of the Pellenor. Minas Tirith was the tower of the king, whereas Barad dur was the tower of the dark lord. But it's really up to oneself which towers the title means.

I always took it as Barad dúr and Orthanc as it was an alliance between the 2....could be wrong though!

I think that TTT in the books stands for Orthanc and The tower of Cirith Ungol. Although Barad-dûr is obviously important, no one goes there in any of the books. It is simply talked about. Minas Tirith doesn't really come into play at all until ROTK, so it also couldn't be part of the title.
However, in the movie because Sam and Frodo didn't ever go to Cirith Ungol, TTT in the movie is refering to Orthanc and Barad-dûr. There was a whole lot more in the movie about the union between Saruman and Sauron.

Ya, I have difficulty spelling a lot too. I tend to spell better when typing than writing though. This is a good site to find the correct spellings of Tolkien words: www.glyphweb.com/arda/

I would go to conventions if I could. I don't have the time, or the money, and there aren't many conventions within 3 hours drive from where I live.
