The USS Beyond hung in its drydock morings like a long elegant lynx stretched in a tree. Jordan Garrick had the pilot of the shuttlepod make a third loop around the width and length of the masterful work of engineering that was the Sovereign-Class vessel. Garrick sat watching the angles, curves and lines of his new command fill the window in front of him in silence.
It was the silence that was unnerving the young ensign that was acting as the captain's pilot. The young woman thought she could impress the senior officer in hopes he would reckonmend her for transfer to the Beyond. But so far the oppertunity to ask for the transfer had not presented itself with the untalkative commanding officer. Well it was now or never, she thought as she began the last swoop around the bow and made their way towards the shuttlebay.
"Beautiful ship isn't she, sir."
Garrick brought himself out of his thoughts, "Oh. Yes she is."
The conversation died as quickly as it began and the pilot landed the pod in a neat little space in the back of the shuttlebay. Garrick quickly got off and was just as rapidly met by a yeoman with a PADD.
Garrick took the PADD and started walking out of the bay, causing the yeoman to scramble to keep up. "I want the ship ready to depart in 24 hours," he was saying without looking to see if the yeoman was even there, "And I want each of the senior officers to report to my ready room as soon as the check-in."
"Check-in. sir?" the yeoman asked surprised, "All senior staff still have four days R&R."
Garrick turned and glared at the yeoman, "As of now all shore leave is cancelled and all crew needs to be back here in 12 hours. If you need me Ill be in my ready room."
With that Garrick stormed off ahead, leaving the confused yeoman standing there.

Exiting the turbolift before the doors fully opened on the bridge, Garrick waved off the customary "Captain on the bridge salute". Instead he focused on the tactical station.
"Open a direct channel to Deep Space Nine, then pipe it to my ready room." he said as his hard stare nearly melted the ensign whow was maning it. He then disappeared into said ready room like a storm cloud on a summer's day.
A few minutes later Garrick was looking at the image of a red-haired woman in a captain's uniform. "Captain Kira," he said in curt greating.
"Captain Garrick," she replied with a hint of a smile, "It's a pleasure to see a fellow Bajoran Starfleet captain again."
The two had meet some weeks back while attending a diplomatic function held on the new UFP member world and their shared homeworld, Bajor. "I wish I could say this is a social call, Captain. Im contacting you to inform you that the Beyond has been assigned to search for the Prophet's Pathmaker."
Kira's face showed no hint of surprise, "I was under the impression that Starfleet decided that this is better left to the Bajoran government since this was not a military vessel but a private one."
"I convenced Command otherwise."
This time Kira's surprise was clear, "You must be a powerful debate master, Captain,"
Garrick ignored the unmentioned question as to just how he did the convencing and pressed on to the rest of the reasons he contacted her. "By my reckoning my ship will be at the station in under two days and I would like to have as much information as possible when i arrive. I understand that the ship was going on an civil expedition of the Gamma Quadrent."
Kira nodded, "Our records show that they were three weeks on the otherside of the wormhole before contact was lost."
Garrick nodded. That matched information that he had had from other sources. "I want all the information you can find for me. Including anything that might not had made it to Starfleet Command." He cut her off before she could say what she was getting ready to reply, "I know a little of the crew and know that some of them are known for not trusting Starfleet and so would not tell them everything they really knew."
Kira nodded and then smiled with a touch of concern, "Sounds like you have a personal stake in finding the Prophet's Pathmaker."
"More then you could ever know," he said softer then the rest of the converstation had been, "See you in two days, Garrick out."

Commader Sparrow was sitting on a sunny beach indulging in a frozen rum drink. He was noticing the beautiful women and was admiring the fact these women were topless. "God, I love nude beaches." He thought to himself.
He noticed a beautiful blonde girl laying on her towel and she was reaching for her tanning lotion. "Mind if I haelp you miss?" He said as sat down next to her. "No, not at all." She said as she handed the bottle to him and layed flat on the towel.
"Mmmmmm," She purred, "Youre really good." Leaning over, he said in her ear, "Well I try."
Turing over, she looked deep into his eyes and said "Mind trying in mt private quarters?"
"Not at all." He said as he helped her up and held her hand as she lead him to her room.
Just as they were kissing and really getting into it, it happened. Beepbeepbeep. The holodeck's atteion alert sounded. "Commander Sparrow please report to your vessel." Said the computer's voice.
"Ah, just as I'm having fun." He said as he got up and looled at his holodate. "We'll finish later darling."
He walked slowly down the corridor of the station as he noticed her, The USS Beyond. "Whew, ol cap's got a nice looking bird." He thought to himself as he continued his trek to the beaming platform.
He beamed over to the ship and noticed the lavishness of it. "This is the most beautiful ship I've ever been on." He said as he tapped his communicator, "Computer, Captain Garrick's location please."
"Captain Garrick is in his ready room." the computer's voice said.
He walked his way to the location and pressed the alert button to signal his presense.

Garrick looked up from his computer screen long enough to bark out a tense, "Enter!"
Once he saw who was disturbing him, his expression mellowed a bit. Sitting back in his seat, Garrick gave his long time friend a slight smile. "It's about time you reported in, Bird-Brain. I was beginning to think I would have to ride off into the sunset alone."
Garrick got up and gave Sparrow a brotherly hug and clapped his shoulder a few times before allowing his executive officer to sit down in the chair in front of his desk.

Counselor Stacey Crusher walked down the hall of the space station. She was nervious. this was her first duty as ship's counselor. She was human which made her time harder at the academy then the impaths she had trained with. Along with her famous last name. Her long red hair fell down around her face, kept casual. She hated to be uniformed. Stacey wore a long flowing red dress that made her stand out against the sea of starfleet uniforms. As well as her black high heeled boots she wore. Turning to the left, she entered the transporter room. Walking onto the pad and standing still, she wonder what her crew would be like, since it would take some time for them to warm up to her. She felt a tingle as she watched the room slowly dissolve, and a new room appeared. However they all looked the same to her. The only way she knew she was in a new location was the fact that there was a different man standing behind the console. "Welcome the the USS Beyond Counselor," The Transporter chief said.

Lieutenant Elden Vaughan came to the USS Beyond with a minimum of fanfare -- just as he liked it. So far, only the transporter chief and a few crewmen he had passed in the corridors knew he was there -- unless, of course, the transporter chief was notifying the captain of arrivals. He stopped off at his quarters -- utilitarian at best, also the way he liked it -- to drop off some supplies he had brought on board with him, then went to the bridge to report to Captain Garrick -- a man he was looking forward to meeting face to face.

Returning to his seat behind the desk, Garrick's expression switched from one of enjoyable reunion to one of grim duty.
"Sorry to cut your shore leave short but something has come up," he said in his commanding officer's voice, "My nephew Yardan, as you recal,l gave up his Starfleet commission when he was offered to pursue xenobiology on board a private Bajaroan science ship in the Gamma Quadrent. Three days ago his ship entered an area of the region that had seen new activity by the Jem'hadar after the report from Odo of the Fonders disappearence." Garrick's gaze turned colder as he held up three fingers, then lowered one, "Two days ago all transmissions from the ship stopped all together."
"Our job is to find them." he ended coldly, "Or whats left of them."
His comm-badge beeped. reaching up and tapping it, "Garrick here."
The transporter chief's voice "Lieutenant Vaughan and Counselor Crusher have both beamed back from shore leave, sir."
"Thank-you, Garrick out." he then turned back to his exec, "Thoughts?"

"No, not really captain." he said affirmly. "Is everyone on board now?" his tone changed to urgency. "If so, we need to get underway."
He got up to turn to leave and stopped and looked at his comrade. "Don't worry cappy, we'll find him and the vessel. See you on the bridge."

Stacey walked along the gray hallway. All of the halls seemed to look the same. Getting lost would not be a problem, she thought. Passing by other officers she did seem to stick out. Her long red dress made the crew notice her among the sea of uniforms. Walking toward her quoter's which would also serve as her office. she wondered was it her last name that brought her here. Thinking of all the family stories of adventure and danger that she had heard. The tales of being a Crusher. Now it would be her turn to add to them.

His frown growing ever deeper, Garrick slapped his comm badge after linking it with the ships public address system, "Crusher and Vaughan, please report to the Captain's ready room, without delay." He ended sternly.

Exiting the turbo-lift, she made her way to the ready room. Taking in the sites on her way so she would not get lost. She entered and took a seat.

Vaughan entered the ready room a few moments behind Crusher, whose last name he recognized but didn't comment on. He nodded to her and took a seat.

Garrick stood up and shook each of their hands, "Welcome aboard the Beyond," he said as warmly as he could. Sitting down again he launched into what he needed to go over with these two officers.
"Under normal circumstances a ship leaving spacedock after under going a massive refit like this one has would go on a shake-down cruise. Im saying this mainly for Counselor Crusher's benefit, Lieutenant, but this also is of importance to you," he said giving the young man a careful gaze.
"We are about to go on a mission that might very well led us into a battle situation with the Jem'hadar in the Gamma Quadrent. Normally this wouldnt be a problem but Starfleet staffed my vessel with mainly new graduates from the Academy."
Garrick looked at the red-headed young woman, "Counselor, Im a pretty much open captian to my crew, but given the circumstances of this mission, which Ill make a briefing about in due time, and the fact that the crew is mostly green, I will be counting on you to inform me as to the mindset of the crew. Your posting to this ship is no whim of fate. I knew your Aunt Beverly prior to her second posting to the Enterprise and I know the potential that comes from the Crusher name. I expect that potential from you."
He then looked at the new security chief, "And I requested your posting here, Lieutenant, because I read the report about the mutany you helped put down. I wanted someone I could trust acting as my security and tactical officer, especially for this mission."
Garrick eyed them both for a minute, "Questions?"

Vaughan listened with rapt attention to the captain's briefing -- it would actually help him get to know the man, as how a captain went about briefing his crew said a lot about how he would run his ship. Vaughan had to admit he was impressed with the way this captain carried himself -- he definitely had the proper bearing to command a Starfleet vessel.
"Sir, if you read the reports about the mutiny then you know I was forced to kill a superior officer," he finally said. "That's not going to be a problem for anybody, is it?"

"Lieutenant," Garrick said in a calm and controled manner, "I read all the reports, including the ones from the official inqurary made by Command after the dust had settled. And I agree with the findings of the Judge Advocate General, you did kill the ships first officer but only to prevent him from not only killing you commanding officer but using the ship to spark a war with the Romulans during their state of chaos caused by the takeover and death of Shinzon. By doing so you acted in the best manner for your ship, crew, and the ideals of Starfleet."
"But, that does not mean I want you to go around the decks of this ship prepared to assassinate anyone. Simply report anything out of the ordainary to me. Are we clear?"
