"Yes, sir," Vaughan said. He now knew even more about this captain -- although he was a no-nonsense type, he was an understanding person as well. He had just alleviated most of Vaughan's concerns about the potential for trouble because of his past history, and he had had no obligation to do so.

"I will give you daily reports on the crew," She replied. The thought of battle didn't agree with her, but she pushed it away and focused on her duty. Listening to her new captain she nodded in response. As well as Elden. By his history, she could already tell that it would be best to keep her doors always open. "Um, Captain. I know it's a bit early but maybe we should have a little get together in 10 forward. Just a meet and greet with the crew. It will give us a chance to know one and other. Since it is a small crew. Before we take off."

Garrick just shook his head for a moment, "Counselor, our small crew is about 800 people strong. And thats smaller then we are supposed to have. Which leads to the next point. Its smaller then normall because we are leaving right away as soon as final preperations are made."

"This must be a really urgent mission, then," Vaughan commented, adding "sir" belatedly a few moments later. He tried to keep any indication of the extent of his surprise off his face.

First Officer Sparrow entered the bridge and strolled around it observing the crew as they bustled about in their duty.
He walked over to the helmsman and said "Set course for the gamma quadrant."
He sat down in the captain's chair awaiting his arrival.

Ta'sude tugged on the collar of his newly replicated uniform with the talon on his index finger. He was not quite sure how humanoids could wear these clothes that were so close to the body. When he was accepted by Starfleet for the Officer Exchange Program they offered him a chance to wear a uniform similar to what he was used to serving amoung his people, Ta'sude turned it down for reasons if he was going to leave amoung the races of the Alpha and Beta Quadrents then he would dress like them as well.
He saw his reflection in the panal on the wall. The black of the uniform complimented the purplish black of his short fur. He saw that his pointed ears on top of his head twitched irracticly and his long tail moved about behind him in fits and spurts like a snake dangleing from a tree. Ta'Sude knew that it was the uniform that was at fault. He was simply nervous. And why should he not be. The only thing he really knew first hand about these Federationers was that their scents were varied for species to species even amoung the same species, they chattered like wo'tod hanging in trees, and that they were able to do what tons of races in the Gamma Quadrent was unable to do...defeat the much feared Founders and the Dominion. They even were able to stand their ground against Jem'Hadar troopers, something even the strongest of his people prefered not to do.
The lift opened and Ta'Sude stalked out. His feet, being too large for standard footweat, treaded lightly on the deck and he could feel the vibrations of the ship flow through his paw pads up his legs.
Having studied the updated personal files that Command had provided him as part of his quick reassignment to the Beyond, he knew just who it was the was telling the young ensign to lay in a course for the Gamma Quadrent.
"In order to do that, Commander Sparrow," He announced, his deep and slightly exotic soundy voice coloring his Federation standard, "He would need to set a course for the Bajoran Wormhole and Deep Space Nine. And Im sure you would like to finish having your crew report in."
He handed Sparrow a small PADD, "Lieutenant Ta'Sude, reporting for active duty as per orders. Helm and Operations specialist."

"It is, Mr Vaughan," Garrick snapped with a sharp swivel of his head, taking in the young man in a single cold stare. The gaze softened for a moment, "Im sorry, I have...a personal...stake in finding the ship as quickly as possible."
He then looked back at the Counselor, "I apologize if I seem, less then sympathtic, to you in your learning about ship service. Also, I am aware the Starfleet gives you a broad disgracion when it comes to uniform on ships that have a civilian compliment, but I would prefer that wear a standard uniform while on ships business and such duty. It creates less distraction, and I will need to keep attention off you so you can observe things without being observed doing so. I hope I am makeing sense."
"If there are no other questions..." he prompted just to see if there were any.

Vaughan waited to see if Crusher had anything else to add -- he didn't have any further questions. In fact, aside from the nature of his personal stake in this mission -- which, admittedly, was none of Vaughan's business anyway -- the captain had explained everything very well.

She had nothing to add. Her first idea was shot down. And the thought of a battle. But she knew what she was getting into the day she left for starfleet. "No sir." She replied.

Garrick stood up, "Right then, dimissed." he said.
As he watched the two officers begin to shuffle out of the Ready Room he noticed that the counselor seemed to shrink into herself when he rejected her suggestion.
"Mr. Vaughan, report to your station. Counselor, a word please."

Vaughan exited the ready room and reported to his station. He glanced at the helmsman, who was a member of a species he didn't recognize, and a brief flicker of curiosity crossed his face before his expression returned to its usual neutral setting.

"Yes sir," She said as professional as she could. Messing up the moment she meet her new caption ranks right up there with her most embarrassing moments.

"I believe, Counselor, that you have misunderstood me just now," He said, hoping he sounded at least mildly pleasent, "Your idea for a get together was a good one and if we were launching under normal circumstances I would have you arrange it."
He took a deep breath before continueing, "Counselor, it is my philosophy that all members of senior staff should be able to confide in each other, including the Captian. This mission is one I arranged. We are going to find a civilian science vessel, and my personal stake is that my nephew, who went into space only because of me, is a member of the missing ship's crew. I am worried that what we find will not be good, and I am more then prepared to go through whatever crops up between me and finding my nephew or at the very least his body"
"Because of this I am going to be very moody and often irritable, please do not take it personal. In fact Im going to give you orders that will not appear in the ship's log. You are to keep and eye on me." He straightened to his full height as he often did when giving orders to his crew, "You are to make sure that I do not cross the line of no return, and you are to tell no one of these orders I am giving you, not even Mr. Vaughan or the XO Commander Sparrow. Am I clear?"

Ta'Sude noticed the young officer who came out of the Captain's Ready Room. He saw that he too wore the mustard gold color of ship's operations and soon realized that he was a security officer when the young man took up a place at the Tactical console. He also noticed the young human's brief expression of curiousity when both their eyes met for a moment, and then the human's face returned to an almost scowl of professionalism.
Ta'Sude became curious in turn because of this event. When ever any other Alpha species saw him the curious looks remained on their face the entire time that he and they were in the same space, and more then likely well after he would go on about his own business. This security officer was different and Ta'Sude wanted to know why. After all wasn't that the reason he came to be in Starfleet in the first place, to learn of other cultures?
While waiting for the XO to acknowledge his orders to come aboard, the felinoid gracefully and quietly stalked around the bridge to Tactical. He moved so silently that the human had yet to notice his presence there.
"Greetings," he annouced, it sounded almost like a purr then a word.

"This must be really hard on you. When family is involved it becomes more then just another mission. You have my word. My door is always open to you any time. May be it would be best if we have regally scheduled meetings."
